Learn to Read & Write Japanese Classes

Class Offerings

Let's learn to read and write Japanese while having fun. Children will not only learn to read and write Japanese but also learn to listen to and speak Japanese through book reading, singing, games, and art. Visit this page for schedule and tuition.

Beginning Hiragana Class: 

In this class, children will learn to read and write all the regular hiragana characters from 'a' to 'n.' 

Expected achievement level to move to the next level:
  • can read all plain hiragana characters
  • can write all plain hiragana characters
  • can read words consisting of plain hiragana characters

Can take along with :
  • Hiragana Master class (If reached 80% of Beginning Hiragana class level)

Hiragana Master Class:

This class is for children who have reached the expected achievement level of Beginning Hiragana Class. In this class, we will review plain hiragana and learn to read and write additional non-plain hiraganas including voiced consonants and half voiced consonants.  Children will also learn "ha vs wa," he vs e" and two different "o"s. 

Expected achievement level:
  • can accurately read words that include non-plain hiragana characters
  • can accurately write words that include non-plain hiragana characters
  • can accurately read and write particles "ha (pronounced as wa)" "wo" and "he (pronounced as e)"
  • can read sentences consisting of hiragana only
  • can write simple sentences using hiragana only

​Prerequisites:
  • Beginning Hiragana class or equivalent 

Can take along with :
  • Beginning Kanji class
  • Beginning Katakana class

Beginning Katakana Class:

This class is for children who have reached the expected achievement level of Beginning Hiragana Class. In this class, children will learn to read and write all katakana characters from "a" to "n". They will learn both plain and non-plain katakana characters including voiced consonants and half voiced consonants.  Children will also learn "ha vs wa," he vs e" and two different "o"s.  

Expected achievement level:
  • can read all the katakana characters (when shown randomly) 
  • can write from "a" to "n" in the order 
  • can read words in katakana
  • can write words in katakana

Prerequisites:
  • Beginning Hiragana class or equivalent 

Can take along with :
 • Hiragana Master class
 • Beginning Katakana class

Beginning Kanji Class:

This class is for children who finished at least Beginning Hiragana class. Children can take this class and Katakana class or Hiragana Master class during the same session. They will learn 40 kanjis out of 80 kanjis Japanese 1st graders learn. They will learn stroke orders and different readings of the same kanji - all in fun and supportive environment.

Expected achievement level:

  • can write the target 40 kanji characters in correct stroke orders
  • can accurately read words that include the target 40 kanjis
  • can accurately write words that include the target 40 kanjis with okurigana
  • can read sentences that consist of the target 40 kanjis, hiraganas, and katakanas
  • can write sentences using the target 40 kanjis, hiraganas, and katakanas

​Prerequisites:
 • Beginning Hiragana class or equivalent 

Can take along with :
 • Hiragna Master class
 • Beginning Katakana class

Japanese For Teens:

This class is for teens (12-18 years old) who can understand basic Japanese and want to learn more. Students will practice speaking, listening, writing "hiragana" and "katakana", and reading some "kanji". In addition to the basics, our original learning materials include age-appropriate "anime", "manga", games, movies, news and social media, so that students can learn practical Japanese as well as Japanese culture while having fun.  

Expected achievement level:


   • can accurately read and write words that include hiragana characters and katakana characters
   • can read sentences consisting of hiragana, katakana, and the targeted 240 kanjis
   • can write simple sentences using hiragana and katakana
   • can make simple conversations with teachers and peers
